TARC and Kentuckiana Air Education (KAIRE) are partnering for the 14th annual Design-a-Bus contest featuring artwork by schoolchildren throughout the Louisville area.

The theme is “We Care About The Air,” which recognizes the efforts of KAIRE and TARC to reduce harmful emissions while challenging elementary and middle school children to think about ways they can improve air quality.

“This is an important theme and we look forward to seeing the imaginative artwork children will create about improving air quality. We also can’t wait to see the artwork wrapped on a TARC bus,” said Barry Barker, executive director of TARC.

“We are excited about this partnership with TARC and working together to draw attention to achieving cleaner air in Kentuckiana,” said KAIRE spokesman Thomas Nord.

The Design-a-Bus contest is open to all elementary and middle school students in Jefferson, Oldham, and Bullitt counties in Kentucky and Floyd and Clark counties in southern Indiana. Twelve winners will have their posters displayed on a TARC bus, and winners and their guardians will be invited to ride the bus in next year’s Kentucky Derby Festival Republic Bank Pegasus Parade on Thursday, May 2, 2013. Artwork becomes the property of TARC.

Potential artwork ideas include planting a tree, riding a bike, remembering to turn out the lights before leaving the house, and reminding parents or older siblings not to leave their vehicles idling for too long.  For further inspiration, students are encouraged to visit www.helptheair.org and other websites relating to clean air.

Past Design-a-Bus competitions have focused on bicycle safety, the benefits of “Going Green,” the history of public transportation in Louisville, and creating a more compassionate city.
